How to Celebrate the Super Bowl in Class

Football fan or not, your students are sure to LOVE a day full of learning with everything football themed! Below I’m sharing how to celebrate the Super Bowl in class. It’s always one of my class’ favorite days of the school year! Thus, I know your students are sure to enjoy it, too!

1) Set the Stage to Celebrate the Super Bowl

First things first, add décor to make your classroom fit the football theme. Now, before you start rolling your eyes, remember that a LITTLE goes a LONG way here! Conversely, I’m not saying you cover every wall surface or spend hours setting up special props. Think low key, low cost, and low prep. These little details will build excitement and wonder in your students, helping them buy into the theme for the day! To illustrate, below are a few ideas I use in my classroom:

  • Wear a referee jersey: ask the P.E. teacher if they have any you can borrow! You can also check Goodwill and find them on Amazon here.
  • Create a Goal Post: Cut yellow butcher paper in long strips and roll to create a simple goal post! I like framing ours around the whiteboard.
  • Add a Table Cloth: Wrap tables in green or yellow butcher paper, dollar tree table cloths, or football field table cloths from Amazon.
  • Hanging Posters : Grab simple items from Wal-Mart, party stores, or Amazon.
  • Play Sports Music: Have the NFL theme song on repeat while students are entering class to make them feel in the zone!
  • Pass out Tickets: The day prior to Football Day, pass out Game Day tickets to your class to build anticipation! Tell them to bring back the ticket (however, if they lose it, its ok of course) the next day for a day full of fun! They will get so excited! See a ticket example below.

2) Football Themed Learning Activites

From the moment students enter through the end of the day, almost every activity will weave in the football theme! Personally, I like to take the content we are already doing and give it a football spin. However, you can also use this day review past content. Below are a few of the activities we will do:

celebrate the super bowl activities

1. “Design A Uniform” For morning work, my students will be tasked to design a uniform for a new NFL team! They will pick a mascot and design a uniform in the colors and style of their choice. Then they will support their reasoning for their choices in writing. In addition, we will share our designs with a partner.

2. “Our Class Graph” Following morning work, we’ll move into morning meeting. During this time, we’ll ask each classmate who they are rooting for during the game. After that, we’ll graph the results as a bar graph.

3. “Edit the Post” During grammar, we’ll edit the post submitted by the head coach for the game. Students will look for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors.

4. “Earn your Concession Treats” Throughout this math activity, students solve problems to earn (small portions) of popular concession items! For example, I use cotton candy, soda, popcorn, and pretzels. Each treat has its own page of math story problems that fit the current skill we are working on. As you can imagine, this activity is a big hit!

5. “Complete the Pass” Throughout this reading activity, students work in small groups to read football themed mini-passages with reading skill questions. They track each answer on their answer sheet. After answering all their questions, they get to “pass” a mini football into point buckets for each right answer they had as a group!

3. Fun Stuff to Celebrate the Super Bowl

Over the course of the day students will be engaged and working so hard on all the learning activities that sometimes they just need a brain break! All the excitement and energy can be a great thing for learning, but can also create chaos if not controlled. Thus, I find brain breaks like the ones listed next to be perfect outlets for letting out extra energy:

  • Just Dance Football Brain Break
  • Training Camp Brain Break
  • How to Draw a Football Art
  • Football Mystery Doug

Let me help you…

All of the activities described here and MORE are assembled for you in a low prep/low stress format in my Football Themed Transformation Day resource! Let me make your life easier with premade slides, printables, and activity descriptions to guide you through each part of the day!

Another option…

Want to do something Super Bowl themed, but not for a whole day? I’ve got you covered there, too! Another option is to play the “SAVE SUPER BOWL” digital math escape game for an engaging, fun, and challenging experience! I plan to play this game before the Super Bowl and do the Super Bowl Day following the Super Bowl.

, I know you and your class will enjoy these Super Bowl activities as much as my class and I have.

Happy Super Bowl Season!
