Teach Holidays Around the World in the Most Exciting Way!

Have you ever wished you could take your students on a trip around the world? No passport required. No permission slips, no airport delays. Just your classroom, a little curiosity, and a holidays around the world adventure that students will not stop talking about. That is exactly what this unit makes possible. And the best part? It is incredibly easy to pull off.

Ready to Turn Your Students Into World Travelers?

When students learn about holidays and cultures from around the world, something really special happens. They start asking questions. Then they start making connections. And before long, they start to see that the world is so much BIGGER than their own backyard.

I recommend this unit for December for one big reason: the curiosity it sparks in students is unlike anything else. From discovering traditions that look completely different from their own, to finding surprising similarities between cultures they thought had nothing in common, the learning goes so much deeper than facts on a page. And yet, that is just the beginning.

December is the PERFECT time to bring this unit into your classroom. So many of the holidays in this unit are happening during this month. Students are already in holiday mode, so the timing just clicks. Plus, when they discover that Christmas is celebrated with different traditions in countries like Germany and Italy, the questions start pouring in. That is the kind of learning that sparks real conversation.

Now Boarding…Departing Soon

Your students are about to become passport-carrying world travelers. And they do not even have to leave their seats.

Every trip starts with an interactive slide that brings a new country to life. Students are not just reading facts off a page. They are watching videos, learning about traditions, and actually experiencing what it feels like to be somewhere new. That difference matters more than you might think.

As they explore each country, students record what they learn in their own passport booklet. Facts, traditions, things that surprised them. It all goes right in the passport. And at the end of each trip, they earn a stamp featuring that country’s flag. Just like a real traveler collecting memories along the way.

I love how easily these lessons fit into the school day. I recommend using them during Morning Meeting as a fun way to kick off the day, but they work just as well woven into Social Studies for a longer exploration. Either way, there is room to linger if your students are not ready to move on yet.

First Things First, Grab Your Passport!

Every great traveler needs a passport. And in this unit? Your students get one of their very own.

As they travel to each new country, they record what they learn right inside their passport booklet. Facts about the holiday. Traditions that caught them off guard. Things they never knew existed. It becomes their own personal collection of everywhere they have been.

And then comes the moment they look forward to EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. At the end of each trip, students earn a passport stamp featuring that country’s flag. Just like a real traveler would.

Students feel like they actually went somewhere real. That feeling is exactly what keeps them coming back excited for the next destination.

Your Students Are About to Travel the WORLD

One of the things I love most about this unit is the variety of destinations. Students are not just learning about one or two holidays. They are traveling to countries all over the world and discovering celebrations that look completely different from one another. And yet, as they explore, they start to notice that so many of these holidays share something in common too.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the holidays students will explore:

  • Diwali
  • Hanukkah
  • Kwanzaa
  • Christmas in Germany
  • Christmas in Italy
  • Las Posadas
  • St. Lucia’s Day
  • Chinese New Year

There is so much more waiting inside the unit! In fact, every destination brings something new to discover. A different tradition, a different way of celebrating, and a different part of the world your students never knew existed. By the time they collect their last passport stamp, they will have traveled further than most adults have in a lifetime.

Wait…These Holidays Have Something in Common?

Here is where the learning gets really interesting. Once students have traveled to a few different countries, they start to notice things. Some holidays involve candles, while others center around special foods. Many are celebrated with music and dancing. And even more surprisingly, some feel incredibly similar even though they happen on the other side of the world.

That is exactly where the Venn diagrams come in. After exploring different holidays, students get the chance to compare and contrast what they have learned. What makes Hanukkah different from Diwali? What do Christmas in Germany and Las Posadas have in common? Those conversations are honestly some of the richest ones you will have all year.

I love that there is enough content in each lesson to go as deep as your students want to go. Some days you will scratch the surface. Other days your class will have SO many questions that you end up spending way more time than you planned. Both are a win.

Final Boarding Call: This Is the Trip Your Students Will Never Forget!

Let’s be real. December is already A LOT. Between the holiday events, the classroom parties, the end of semester push, and somehow keeping 25 excited kids focused, your plate is FULL. The last thing you need is to spend your Sunday nights building two weeks of lessons from scratch.

That is exactly why I love this unit. Everything is already planned, prepped, and ready to go. The slides are built, the passport booklets are ready to print, and the stamps are waiting. You just show up, press play, and watch your students board that imaginary plane.

And here is what happens next. Your students become curious. Before long, they start asking questions you did not expect. Connections between cultures begin surprising even you. As a result, they walk out of your classroom knowing that the world is so much bigger and more beautiful than they ever realized.

That is the kind of teaching moment that stays with you. And with them. And honestly? It did not take two weeks of planning to make it happen. It just took one really good unit and a class full of kids who were ready for an adventure!
